Faith-full Friends

Friends. We all need them. They come in all shapes and sizes, countries and regions. This writing business has challenged me to find friends over the waves of the internet. People I’ve never met have read my words and I’ve read theirs.

Today I have some friends I want you to meet. They’ve fed my soul over the last 11 days and I think they’ll feed yours as well.

The first friend isn’t a writer, but rather a musician. Lauren Daigle. Her song and album How Can It Be have spoke such words of truth to my heart time and time again. So the first order of business is here…

From there, I want to share some other 31 days writers that have encouraged me on my faith journey.

The first is Jen Daugherty. Just her web address alone (faithmustardseed.com) confirmed she was someone to follow. Jen is talking about Brave for this month of October. One of my favorites of hers is called At the Edge, where she describes a bungee jumping experience…

“When you’re standing at the edge, you can’t see the bungee. You can only see the leap.”

I hope you’ll visit her site, here’s the address again.

Next on the list: Alisa Stoner. Alisa and I know each other in real life and not just via the internet! We share a common bond of homeschooling and also a love of writing. I’m so thankful to be sharing this 31 day challenge with her. I love her blog, Dreams Running. And for 31 days, that’s exactly what she’s talking about – dreams. Her post yesterday called, Living Your Dreams on the Way to the Promised Land especially resounded with me.

“We don’t feel like we’re living our dreams when we’re just being faithful with a normal day, but that’s the only way to our promised lands.  The only way to our promised land is by living each day in Him.  Doing what we know is right.  Living for His glory now–before it ever feels glorious.”

See what I mean? Yes, she is one to follow.

So right after I read Alisa’s post, I read a post by Katie Reid called Delays Construct Character and I couldn’t believe how much alike the two sounded. She said,

Sometimes God restores by taking us down a road that we weren’t expecting. Sometimes God renews our perspective by rerouting us. Detours and delays can be frustrating but they aren’t the same as dead-ends.” Which is what Alisa was getting to with “Living for His glory now- before it ever feels glorious.”

For 31 days, Katie is writing about Restoring our Soul. She calls herself a tightly wound woman and she’s trying to unravel that, which is why her blog title reads, “Finding Grace in the Unraveling.” As another tightly wound woman, and one who can visualize unraveling a string of yarn, Katie’s blog is one of my new favorites.

Finally I want to share with you a lady named Sarah Koontz. Sarah’s blog is titled, “Embrace the story God has Inscribed on Your Heart.” For October she has chosen to share quotes with awe-inspiring pictures to go with them. They are beautiful. But my favorite post that I want to share wasn’t actually part of the 31 day challenge. It’s called It’s Time to Stop Apologizing for Being You

She put to words what I do a lot…apologize for things that are, well, just ME! She greatly encouraged me with the words,It is so easy for me to see the beauty in others, but I struggle to find it within myself. Maybe you can relate? When I look inward, all I see are the things I don’t like. But recently, I found myself wondering…What if all of the things I dislike about myself are actually gifts from God to be used for His glory?”

Can you see how all this is feeding and watering my faith seed? God is working and speaking through you wonderful people! Thank you so much for pouring your heart and soul out and then pushing publish for all the world to read. It has meant a lot to me!

And Sarah, if you read this, here’s a picture of my little guy I think you’ll appreciate:

Faith to be Diligent

Day 1 of this 31 day writing challenge I planted my mustard seed of faith. I’ve now spent 10 days watering and caring for it. Today, I would say, the seed has shed its casing and is nicely burrowed in the fertile soil.

So let’s talk about what that looks like –

Diligence. This year 2015 began with that word. Diligence.

I used to like this word. It meant seeing a challenge through to the end. It meant there would be challenges. Synonyms to Diligence are words like Endurance, Perseverance, and Persistence all of which remind me of my high school cross-country days. Before a race we would huddle up, say a prayer, stack our hands and break away with enough adrenaline to carry us the first mile.

The Dirt is My Story {Guest Post}

What a treat I have for you today. One of my dearest friends, Maggie Ghrist took some time to share about life in Kenya. Maggie is a fellow blogger, wife, mother of 3 boys, but also lives in Mombasa, Kenya. She and her husband Josh serve with Lighthouse for Christ which provides quality eye care, pastoral training and church planting in the Mombasa area. If you’ve followed me any length of time on this blog, when I speak of our mission trips to Kenya, this is who we visit!

What a woman of faith she is! Today she’s talking about dirt and not just any dirt, African dirt… and she’s thankful for it. So, Maggie, it’s all yours my friend –

Faith to Trust

This is my message for today. So many times I think I need to muster up enough faith that God will work things out the way I have in mind.

I hear Him asking me to have faith and trust Him even when He doesn’t move the mountains I want moved, part the waters I want to walk through, or give the answer I’m crying out for.

Faith of Something Beautiful

I feel like I’m stuck in the molasses swamp on Candy Land. Lose a turn. But I can’t get out. Can’t find another color to move on.

I can’t even truly pinpoint why I’m stuck. When did I even draw that card? How long have I been here and not realized it?

I heard Something Beautiful on the radio by Steven Curtis Chapman. It struck a chord in me.

Shadows of Faith

Please don’t throw your coffee at the screen when I tell you I enjoy running. In effort to relieve stress, some people smoke, some drink, some eat, some shop, I run. I picture it as an old steam engine. Every few miles the engine stops and literally lets off excess steam that’s accumulated as the coal burned.

I seem to burn a lot of coal in this life and it leaves me with some steam build-up. Running helps me blow off things that are bothering me or gives me a chance to yield in areas I feel the Lord working in. I often ask Him to pound the Julie right out of me as my feet pound the road, and breathe His Spirit into mine instead.

Faith to Sit

Melting. It’s what a chocolate bar does when left in the sun. It’s what ice does once brought out of the freezer. It’s also what happens on occasion to me. That occasion happened yesterday.

I don’t know who took the ice out of the freezer but I melted just like it into a puddle of tears.

It was one of those wave pools of emotion that ushered in a sadness so deep I couldn’t rise above it. The bell sounded and tears that I held back and held back called over their friends and together they rose and let loose.

Faith To Find True Joy

Welcome to Day 4 of #write31days. If you’ve just joined me you’re welcome to catch up. Here are the links to Day 1, Day 2, Day 3.

Yesterday I wrote about my friends leaving for Kenya. I’m still processing. I couldn’t keep the tears back as I pictured where they were on the journey.

  • Yep, they arrived at the airport
  • Boarding
  • Take off
  • Round 1 of refreshments
  • Movie #1 (I wonder what’s playing)
  • 1st layover

Faith to Say Good-bye

Two weeks ago I watched as my friends and fellow Kenya sojourners boarded their flight out East…without me.

I’ve been three times now, meeting with the Kenyan ladies, listening to their stories, asking how we can best plan for a ladies conference. I love it. I love them. I love sharing my heart and listening to their story and seeing the Lord guide and unite the two.

I’ve been so excited to return and actually be apart of the conference again.

But I wrote these words on my bed on Texas rather than at the airport.

Faith to Enjoy the Process

A couple months ago I joined a small writer’s group that meets weekly about 30 minutes from my house. It has become the highlight of my week to gather with these people as they tear apart sentences in effort to make it the best it can be. Even though I love it, it is always a fight to get there.

There’s lunch to prepare, school work to check, print out copies of what I’m bringing…double spaced…14 pt…pen…I always forget something! And something always calls out to me as I head out the door.
